Upper Elementary Math – Proportional Reasoning

$ 300.00

When we learn to think and reason proportionally, we gain a powerful tool that enables us to make predictions regarding contexts beyond the scope of our immediate understanding. In this course, students engage in activities that will elicit their ideas about proportional thinking and motivate them (with teacher guidance) to develop tools to represent proportional relationships in multiple ways. The aim is to give students a rich understanding of proportional thinking, as well as tools for representing it, that they can use in subsequent grades and in multiple content areas.  This secular but inclusive semester course is offered in Naperville with in-person class meetings once/week. Students who are not yet fluent with adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing should see our Monday Math Games & Mighty Brains class.

Description

Upper Elementary Math – Proportional Reasoning

Students meet on Wednesdays, 1:00 – 2:25pm with 3 days of 30 minute independent work between classes. Registration is for Fall 2026 semester-long course (13 weeks starting the week of Sept. 9th) but Spring 2027 will also available at the same time and day.

Students in this course must already know how to add, subtract, multiply and divide at a basic level.

This course is taught in a 2-year sequence.  The same topics are covered each year.  First year students get basic level instruction and challenges while the second year students get “stealth” level challenges and support.  First year students that are ready to move forward will be given stealth level challenges.

Topics covered in this course:

  • Understand ratio concepts and use ratio reasoning to solve problems
  • Analyze proportional relationships and use them to solve mathematical problems and problems in real-world context.
  • Understand the connections between proportional relationships, lines, and linear equations.
  • Additional topics as student progress allows including mathematical models, symbols, functions, data analysis and other topics.
Required Materials
Students should bring a small, nut-free snack (can be eaten in 5-10 minutes) and a water bottle and a pencil case with some pencils.  All other materials for this class will be supplied!
Time required outside of class
Students can expect to spend 30-45 minutes, 3 times per week on writing at home depending on your students speed of reading and writing. This work might require internet access.  If your family cannot allocate 30-45 minutes, 3 times per week on writing at home for individual work (which may take less time), this may not be a good fit.
Is This Level a Good Fit for My Child? Parent Considerations
Students should be able to add, subtract, multiply and divide.  Students MUST be able to participate meaningfully and appropriately in a group setting.  Students will spend some time working in small groups and some time working individually.
