Description
Upper Elementary Math – Proportional Reasoning
Students meet on Wednesdays, 1:00 – 2:25pm with 3 days of 30 minute independent work between classes. Registration is for Fall 2026 semester-long course (13 weeks starting the week of Sept. 9th) but Spring 2027 will also available at the same time and day.
Students in this course must already know how to add, subtract, multiply and divide at a basic level.
This course is taught in a 2-year sequence. The same topics are covered each year. First year students get basic level instruction and challenges while the second year students get “stealth” level challenges and support. First year students that are ready to move forward will be given stealth level challenges.
Topics covered in this course:
- Understand ratio concepts and use ratio reasoning to solve problems
- Analyze proportional relationships and use them to solve mathematical problems and problems in real-world context.
- Understand the connections between proportional relationships, lines, and linear equations.
- Additional topics as student progress allows including mathematical models, symbols, functions, data analysis and other topics.
