An introduction Health & Wellness covering the basics a middle school student needs to understand how to stay healthy, how physical health and mental health can be related, how to self-advocate for themselves medically and much more!  There is minimal work (up to 1 hour/week) to do between classes and most of it focuses on self-observation and implementing new ideas.

Middle School Health & Wellness

In-person class Fridays, 12:45-2:15pm and additionally approximately 1 hour of at-home time to implement new information and techniques.

Registration is for the Fall semester or the full school year.

About the Curriculum/Course (click here to expand section)
This is not a highly physical class. This fulfills Physical Education & Health under the “health” component.

By engaging in this course, you will be equipped to more confidently and successfully:

  • Describe the role of health, nutrition, and wellness in their daily lives
  • Evaluate evidence that supports or disproves selected health claims
  • Provide examples of how psychological, spiritual (not necessarily religious), and emotional health are connected to their overall well-being and physical health
  • Identify and manage personal health risks based on current lifestyle choices
  • Identify and implement lifestyle changes that may enhance lifelong health
Required Materials
 At home, students will need access to the internet (home or library) to access their online course, look up information, related published materials and/or videos and do work through the Canvas learning management system. Some videos provided by illuminat-ED will be subscription-based and issued by illuminat-ED as needed. Some videos will be freely available.
Time Required Outside of Class
Students may need approximately 1 hour/week to do work outside of class observing their own behaviors and journaling them, or implementing new habits or doing activities related to their health.
Parent Considerations
There are no prerequisites but students need to be able to talk about the body and mental health in a mature manner.
