Math – Pre-algebra

$ 960.00

Prealgebra helps students transition from arithmetic to algebra and this course does so through a text with accessible writing and built-in study skills resources. In this course, students engage in activities that help create a concrete understanding of the concepts that will help them with higher level math more fluently. This secular but inclusive full year course is offered in Naperville with in-person class meetings once/week with additional work done between classes. Families that are unsure if their child is ready for Pre-algebra may want to consider Upper Elementary Proportional Reasoning.

See below for more details including parent considerations, required materials & time outside of class.

Description

Pre-algebra

Students meet on Thursdays, 9:00 – 10:25 am with 3 hours of work (45 mins every non-class weekday) to do between class meetings.  Registration is for the full year.

Students in this course must already know how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide at a basic level. Basic familiarity with fractions is required.

Course Content (click here to expand)
In this Pre-Algebra course, students will develop the skills and understanding to prepare them for Algebra 1. They will practice skills using self-corrected exercise sets in preparation for chapter tests that gauge their grasp of the material. Activities provide varied opportunities to explore applications of the lesson concepts.

Topics include the following:

  • Rounding and estimating
  • Exponents and order of operations
  • Simplifying algebraic expressions
  • Factoring
  • Least common denominator and equivalent fractions
  • Ratios and proportions
  • Congruent and similar triangles
  • Percents, decimals, and fractions
  • Pictographs, bar graphs, histograms, line graphs, and circle graphs
  • Coordinate systems and paired data
  • Graphing linear equations in two variables
  • Probability
  • Lines, angles, perimeter, area, volume, weight, and mass
Required Materials
Books will be loaned to students for the year and cannot be written in.

Students will need:

  • 1″ to 1-1/2″ binder with 50 sheets of filler/looseleaf paper and at least 2 dividers
  • pencils (students are welcome to bring mechanical pencils)
  • covered pencil sharpener (blade not exposed)
  • pencil bag to contain items
  • If binder does not have pockets on the inside cover, a double pocket folder for handouts.

Additionally, students will need technical ability to access Zoom, EdPuzzle, FlipGrid, Nearpod.com, Discovery Education Streaming, Study.com and Canvas (our learning management system).

At home, students will need access to the internet (home or library) to look up information, related published materials and/or videos and do work through our class learning management system.  Some videos will be subscription-based and issued by illuminat-ED (all students will have accounts for Discovery Streaming and Study.com for additional video support).

All other materials for this class will be supplied!

Time required outside of class
Students can expect to spend up to 3 hours/week to complete various assigned tasks that might require internet access.  If your family cannot allocate 3 hours/week for individual work (which may take less time), this may not be a good fit.  Some of this can be done during Flex Work Time at our facility.

This course has 2 pre-scheduled Asynchronous Learning weeks during Fall Pause & Mid-winter Pause; but does not have additional assigned work during Thanksgiving Week, Winter Break or Spring Break.

Is This Level a Good Fit for My Child? Parent Considerations
Students should be able to add, subtract, multiply, divide and have a basic grasp of fractions.  Students MUST be able to participate meaningfully and appropriately in a group setting.  Students will spend some time working in small groups and some time working individually.
