Description

This engaging, exploratory engineering course by Engineering for Us All (e4usa) is for high school students to help them understand more fully the connection between engineering and their world, what the field of engineering is, and the various opportunities available in the field. The Making course is part of a potential 2-3 year sequence (subsequent year/s not required) designed to be hands-on and engaging. This secular but inclusive full year hybrid course is offered in Naperville as a full year course with in-person class meetings once/week for 3.5 hours with potential additional work done between classes qualifying for 1 full transcriptable CTE credit (Career and Technical Education) and is eligible for college credit at a growing number of well-respected engineering schools.

Pre-Engineering (e4usa+ Making)

In-person class meetings (changed to Tuesdays, 1 day/week):

  • Tuesdays, 12:45-3:30pm

(there may be 30min to 1 hour of work to be done between classes if there are unfinished projects, but that is unlikely)  (Parents may opt to enroll in our Flex Work Session/s to complete work done outside of regular class time)

PRICE REDUCED THROUGH Sept. 21st.
Registration is for the full 2024-25 school year.
There is no required minimum math for the e4usa Making course but this is a high school level course and parents should read through the course description carefully and contact us if you have questions about your child’s fit..

About the Curriculum/Course
This program uses the e4usa. From their description:

“e4usa is an onramp for students to learn about engineering as a profession and a personal practice and increases student confidence to use engineering tools and thinking. Students will practice three systematic continuous improvement practices: consistent critical self-reflection, ethical action, and seeking feedback (e.g. performance data, mentoring, etc.). In the e4usa+Making course, students will examine historical and current engineers and trace their professional origins to create their own understanding of the value of diversity in engineering, as well as build their own identity as a confident problem solver.”

Required Materials

Students will need:

  • mechanical pencils
  • colored pencil set (at minimum, red, yellow, blue & green)
  • 12″ ruler
  • pencil bag to contain items
  • pocket folder

All other supplies and materials will be supplied and are covered in the cost of the course.

Time Required Outside of Class

There may approximately 30min-1 hour/week of work for students to do between the live group class meetings.  There may be weeks that there is no additional work that needs to be done at home, but families should allocate 1 hour/week so that it is available when needed .

Combined with our live class time, this is a total of 3.5-4 hours/week for a course total of 112-128 hours.  This equates to one credit using the Carnegie unit methodology.  Students who do additional projects/work may qualify for a weighted credit.  A weighted credit allows for a grade of “A” to be equal to 5 points on a 4-point grading scale.

Course Content

Units in the program:

  • Engineering is… everywhere
  • Engineering is… creative
  • Engineering is… human centered
  • Engineering is… responsive
  • Engineering is… reflective

Depending on student performance, there is a possibility of earning an Industry Recognized Credential exam in a CAD program through this course.

Parent Considerations
This is a teen-oriented course that is detail-oriented and will have hands-on activities often.  As it is a weighted course, students are expected to be fully engaged and attending to their individual work out of class.  Our organization tries to support students growth in executive function skills.  If your student struggles in this area, know that you will have to partner with us in supporting your child’s success.

Students will also regularly be on point to share ideas in front of a group and participate in group activities during our online sessions.  Shy students will not be bullied into participating by any means; but if your student does not have a habit of “warming up” after getting to know a group–this may not be a comfortable setting for them.
