Description
Gavel Club is the Toastmasters program for students under 18 years old. The club uses Toastmasters public speaking and leadership curriculum. Each student receives Toastmaster’s educational materials for their speech path. Each student is encouraged to take a leadership role and is rotated through speaking spots through the year. As a result, we will not take more than 20 students (ages 10-17). If there is overwhelming interest, based on our space availability, we can run two groups of up to 20 students each to allow for leadership opportunities for all involved. The leadership duties provide an environment where ultimately, the students learn to run the group on their own with loose adult supervision, guidance and feedback. The program materials guide students on speech writing as well as speech critique in a constructive manner. Our group is secular and inclusive. This means that no religious content will be taught but students are welcome to write speeches connected to their individual faith or culture without fear of condemnation or criticism (other than the standard criticism guidelines given for speeches and presentation). The adult leader is accustomed to leading diverse student groups and creating a group culture of respect and productive teamwork. More information available here. Meeting dates Mondays, 3:30-4:30pm, bi-weekly (twice/month for most months) – non-homeschooled students welcome!
